Everything you need to have me on your show or write about Civilian Compass. Grab what you want, no need to ask.

The one-liner

Civilian Compass is a free platform that helps transitioning veterans figure out what career they actually want, and gives them a system for going and getting it.

The paragraph

About 200,000 people leave the U.S. military every year. Transition assistance covers the basics, and a small number go to grad school, but most land in the middle with no process for deciding what's next. Civilian Compass fills that gap. Veterans start with a hypothesis about the role and industry that might fit, get a shortlist of companies measured against it, and go find veterans already inside them. Every conversation gets logged and rated, and the platform surfaces the pattern. It's free, funded by its founder, and takes no money from employers or placement firms.

Bio, short

Lang Barth is a Naval Academy graduate and former Surface Warfare Officer who spent just over five years in the Navy, including two deployments. He's now a Staff Product Marketing Manager at Intuit and the founder of Civilian Compass.

Bio, long

Lang Barth spent just over five years as a Surface Warfare Officer, serving aboard an amphibious transport dock out of Norfolk and later as Navigator on a ballistic missile defense destroyer out of San Diego, with deployments off Libya and in the South China Sea. After leaving the Navy he moved into product marketing, where he's now a Staff Product Marketing Manager at Intuit, and he holds an MBA from UC San Diego's Rady School of Management. He chairs the PMA Launch Conference, leads the San Diego chapter of the Product Marketing Alliance, and has taught for FourBlock for three years. He founded Civilian Compass out of three years of career conversations with hundreds of veterans.

Talking points

  • Why the defense industry pipeline is the default, and why default isn't the same as best
  • What TAP is designed to do and what it structurally can't
  • Why the answer isn't a better job board, it's conversations
  • The uncommon commonality, and why veterans answer other veterans
  • Why Civilian Compass will never take money from employers
